What is a care consultation?
Taking the first step towards arranging care can feel like the hardest one. There's a lot to think about, the language can be unfamiliar, and it's not always obvious where to begin. The good news is that the beginning is genuinely the easy part, and it starts with a simple, no-pressure conversation we call a care consultation.
Think of it as a friendly chat rather than a formal appointment. It's a chance to talk things through with someone who understands the world of care inside out, to ask all the questions on your mind, and to get a clear picture of what live-in care could look like for you or your loved one. There's no commitment, no jargon, and no expectation that you've got everything figured out. Most people who call us are still working out what they need, and that's exactly what the consultation is for.
This guide explains what happens during a care consultation, what you'll come away with, and how it fits into the wider journey of getting care in place.
So, what actually is a care consultation?

A care consultation is an informal conversation, usually over the phone, with one of our Family Care Advisors. It's where we get to know you, understand what you're looking for, and help you figure out whether live-in care is the right fit.
It's the natural place to start whether you're:
- Just beginning to explore your options and want to understand how live-in care works and what it might cost, or
- Ready to move quickly and want to get something reliable in place as soon as possible.
Either way, the consultation helps us establish your needs and make sure we're the right match for you, before moving on to a more detailed care assessment further down the line.
Crucially, every one of our Family Care Advisors has real experience in the care sector. So you’re speaking with someone who genuinely understands care, and who can give you honest, practical guidance based on what you tell them.
What we'll talk about
No two conversations are quite the same, because no two families are. But a typical care consultation tends to cover three main areas.
1. Understanding your situation
We'll start by getting a feel for where things stand right now. Everyone comes to care from a different starting point, and knowing yours helps us point you in the right direction. You might:
- Already have care in place and be looking for more hands-on support
- Be thinking about switching from a provider that isn't working out
- Be moving to live-in care as an alternative to a care home
- Be arranging support after a hospital stay, where a smooth, well-planned discharge really matters
Understanding your starting point lets us tailor everything that follows, including how we'd shape the assessment process if you decide to go ahead.
2. Painting a picture of day-to-day life
One of the most valuable things a consultation offers is a realistic sense of what live-in care actually feels like, day to day. It's easy to picture care in the abstract, but harder to imagine the rhythm of it: the morning routines, the companionship over a cup of tea, the gentle help with the things that have become tricky, and the reassurance of someone being there overnight.
Your advisor will walk you through what a live-in carer can and can't help with, so you can sense-check it against your own situation and feel confident it's the right kind of support. The goal is always the same: helping someone carry on living life on their own terms, in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.
3. Talking honestly about cost and funding
Money matters, and we believe in being straightforward about it from the very first conversation. Your advisor will give you a clear sense of the likely costs and, importantly, talk you through the funding options that might be available to you.
We'll come back to funding in more detail below, because it's an area where a little early guidance can make a real difference.
What you'll come away with
A good consultation should leave you feeling clearer and more confident, not more overwhelmed. By the end of the conversation, you'll have:
- A better understanding of whether live-in care suits your needs
- A realistic picture of what the support would look like day to day
- An honest indication of the likely costs
- Initial guidance on funding routes worth exploring
If you'd like to take the next step, your advisor can then prepare a bespoke quotation based on what you've shared, including an indication of which level of care you're likely to need and a clear, practical plan for getting started. There's never any obligation to proceed. The quotation is simply there so you have everything you need to make an informed decision in your own time.
A closer look at funding
For many families, working out how to pay for care is one of the biggest sources of worry, and one of the areas where good advice early on pays off most. Whether you'll be funding care privately or hoping to access financial support, your advisor can help you understand the landscape.
A few of the main routes worth knowing about:
- Attendance Allowance: a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care. It isn't means-tested, so savings and property don't affect eligibility. In 2026 it's paid at £72.65 per week (lower rate) or £108.55 per week (higher rate), depending on the level of need, and can be claimed alongside other support.
- Local authority funding: your council may contribute following a financial assessment, depending on income, savings and assets. In England, the upper savings threshold is currently £23,250.
- NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC): if there are significant, ongoing health needs, your loved one may be eligible for fully funded care through the NHS, following an assessment by a multidisciplinary team.
None of this needs to be navigated alone. The point of discussing funding during the consultation is to think about the long term, making sure that whatever care we help put in place is sustainable for you and your family, not just today but down the road.
How the consultation fits into the bigger picture
The care consultation is the first conversation, not the last. It's designed to gently establish the essentials so we can make sure live-in care is a viable and safe option, and gather enough information to begin finding a well-matched professional carer.
If you decide to move forward, the next step is a care assessment, a more in-depth, in-person meeting with one of our care managers, who builds a comprehensive, person-centred care plan. After that comes the rewarding part: carer matching, where we work hard to pair you with a carer who's right not just for the care needs, but for the personality, preferences and routines of the person being cared for.
But that's all for later. For now, the only thing you need to do is have a conversation.
