What happens in the first week of live-in care?
Welcoming a live-in carer into the home is a big step, and it is completely natural to feel a mix of things about it: relief that support is finally in place, perhaps, alongside a few nerves about how those first days will actually go. Knowing what to expect makes the whole thing far easier and far less daunting.
So here is an honest guide to what the first week of live-in care usually looks like, and how we help everyone settle in comfortably.
You will not be starting as strangers

By the time your carer arrives, a good deal of groundwork has already been laid. We will have carried out an assessment of your loved one's needs, built a personalised care plan, and carefully matched a carer to them. Wherever possible, we also arrange an introductory call beforehand, so your loved one and their carer have already spoken and heard a friendly voice. The result is that the first day feels more like a warm hello than a cold start.
Day one: arriving and settling in

On the day itself, we arrange your carer's travel, and they arrive having already read your loved one's care plan, so they understand their needs and preferences from the very beginning. Your family care coordinator will then check in that same day to make sure everyone is comfortable and the start has gone smoothly.
First days are deliberately gentle. It is a time for getting to know one another, finding where everything is, and easing into the rhythm of the day, rather than rushing into everything at once.
The first few days: a natural adjustment

Here is the honest part, and an important one. The first few days are an adjustment for everyone, and that is completely normal. Your loved one is getting used to a new person in their home, and their carer is busy learning their routines, their preferences, and all the little things that matter to them.
It is perfectly natural for it to feel slightly unfamiliar at first. Trust and an easy, comfortable rhythm are not built in a single day, they grow with a little time. So please do not worry if the first day or two feels like everyone is still finding their feet, because that is exactly what they are doing, and it is a healthy part of the process.
Getting to know your loved one

Across the first week, your carer is learning the details that make care feel truly personal: how your loved one likes their tea, the shape of their day, their likes and dislikes, the stories and routines that make them who they are. With each passing day, the care becomes a little more tailored, a little more familiar, and a little more their own.
Staying informed and connected

Throughout it all, you can keep a close eye on how things are going through our my edyn portal, with visit summaries, daily notes and wellness updates, and our care team stays in close contact. You will never be left wondering how the first week is unfolding.
The one-week check-in

After around a week, we will get in touch, usually with a friendly phone call, to see how everyone is getting on, make sure your loved one is happy and settled, and sort out anything that could be working better. It is a natural, welcome moment to share how things feel and to raise absolutely anything, however small.
Settling in takes a little time, and that is okay
Perhaps the most helpful thing to hold in mind is this: the first week is the beginning of a relationship, not the finished picture. Small adjustments in those early days are normal and healthy, and the bond between your loved one and their carer usually deepens steadily over the following weeks.
If anything is not quite right, it can be adjusted, and in the rare event that a match does not feel like the right one, we will always work with you to put it right. Most families find that, by the end of the first week or two, a comfortable and reassuring routine has quietly settled into place.
