Is edyn CQC registered, and what does that mean?

When you're trusting an organisation with the care of someone you love, you want to know they're held to a proper standard, not just taking their word for it, but knowing someone independent is checking. So it's one of the most sensible questions a family can ask of any care provider: are you regulated, and by whom?

The short answer is yes — Edyn is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and we hold a rating of "Good" across all five of the areas they assess. But the more useful answer is understanding what that actually means for you, because CQC registration tells you a great deal about the kind of care you can expect. Here's the full picture.

What is the CQC?

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. It's the official body responsible for making sure that care services, from home care providers like Edyn to care homes, hospitals, GP practices and dentists, meet essential standards of quality and safety.

The CQC does this by setting clear standards that providers must meet, registering those who meet them, and then inspecting and monitoring services on an ongoing basis. If a provider falls short, the CQC has real power to require improvements and, where necessary, take enforcement action. In other words, it exists to protect people who use care services, and to give families confidence that the care being provided is safe and good.

(A quick note: the CQC regulates services in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own equivalent regulators: the Care Inspectorate, Care Inspectorate Wales, and the RQIA respectively.)

What does it mean to be CQC registered?

Being registered with the CQC isn't a box-ticking exercise or a one-off badge. It means a provider has met the CQC's fundamental standards and has agreed to be held accountable to them, on an ongoing basis. In practice, a registered provider like Edyn must:

  • Carry out proper assessments and care planning, so that care is safe, personalised and delivered in each person's best interests
  • Recruit, vet and train carers to the required standards, including enhanced background (DBS) checks
  • Have a registered manager in place: a suitably qualified and experienced professional whom the CQC holds responsible for overseeing the quality of care
  • Handle concerns, incidents and complaints properly and transparently
  • Take full responsibility for the management of care: meaning the provider, not you, is the employer of the carers and accountable for the service

This is what's known as a fully managed care service, and it's a meaningful distinction. With a CQC-registered provider, the responsibility for delivering safe, high-quality care sits firmly with the organisation, not on your shoulders.

How the CQC rates care: the five key questions

When the CQC assesses a service, it asks five straightforward but important questions:

  • Is it safe? Are people protected from harm and abuse?
  • Is it effective? Does the care achieve good outcomes and reflect people's needs?
  • Is it caring? Are people treated with kindness, dignity and respect?
  • Is it responsive? Is the care organised around the individual?
  • Is it well-led? Is the service managed well, with good leadership and a culture of improvement?

Based on these, a service is given one of four ratings: Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement, or Inadequate. The CQC also now carries out more continuous monitoring between formal inspections, so a service's quality is kept under ongoing review rather than judged only on a single visit.

Edyn holds a rating of "Good" in every one of these five areas, recognition that we're performing well and meeting the standards expected of us, right across the board. We're proud of that, and we work hard to keep it.

Why this matters for your family

CQC registration translates into some very real reassurances for the people who matter most: you and your loved one:

  • Independent accountability. You're not simply trusting our word; an external regulator holds us to account.
  • Safe, trained carers. Our carers are properly vetted, comprehensively trained, and supported to high standards.
  • Professional oversight. A registered manager and a dedicated care team oversee the care, with clear processes if anything needs attention.
  • Peace of mind. You can get on with being family: a daughter, a son, a husband, rather than becoming a care administrator.
  • Transparency. You can read our CQC inspection report for yourself, any time, free of charge.

See for yourself

One of the best things about the CQC is that everything is open and public. You can look up any provider on the CQC's website (cqc.org.uk) to see their registration, their rating, and their full inspection report.

It's also worth knowing that not every "care provider" is regulated in this way. Introductory agencies, which simply match families with self-employed carers, are generally not CQC registered, and that places the responsibility for managing care on the family. We explain the difference in full in our guide to CQC-regulated care versus introductory agencies, which is well worth a read if you're weighing up your options.
