How to find the right carer for you
Arranging live-in care is one of the most personal decisions you'll ever make. After all, you are not just choosing a service. You're choosing someone to share you or your loved one’s home, your daily routines, and your life. It's a big step, and it's completely natural to feel a little uncertain about where to start.
Finding the right carer doesn't have to feel overwhelming. With the right support and a clear process, you can find someone who doesn't just meet your care needs, but truly fits into your life. At Edyn, we've seen firsthand how transformative the right match can be, and we're here to make sure you find yours.
Here's everything you need to know about choosing the right carer for you.
Understanding what you need
Before you even look at a single carer profile, it helps to take a step back and think about what you're really looking for. This isn't just about care tasks, but about the kind of person you'd feel comfortable having in your home.
Consider the practical side: What kind of support does the person being cared for need day-to-day? Is it help with personal care, medication reminders, meal preparation, or household tasks? Maybe it's all of the above. Being clear on this from the start helps everyone focus on finding the right fit.
Think about the personal side: What sort of person would they enjoy spending time with? Do they share any hobbies or interests? Would they prefer someone chatty and outgoing, or calm and quietly supportive? These things matter more than you might think. After all, your carer will become a familiar face in your home.
Don't forget practical preferences: Would they feel more comfortable with a male or female carer? Does your carer need to be able to drive? These are all things a good care provider will ask about during your initial consultation.
The matching process: how it really works
Once you've had a care assessment, a no-obligation conversation where a care manager learns about your needs, your goals, and what you're hoping to achieve from your care, the matching process begins.
At Edyn, we find carers who match what you're looking for based on three key things: experience, interests, and location. We act as a personal matchmaker for your care, understanding not just the practical requirements, but the human side of things too.
Here is what it looks like:
Training and experience

Your carer needs to have the right skills to support you safely and effectively. Every carer we work with is trained by us, fully insured, and has a clear DBS check. Their digital profile will show you their care experience, their training level, and a breakdown of the support they've provided in the past.
This isn't just about ticking boxes. Instead, it's about peace of mind. Knowing your carer has the right qualifications and experience means you can relax and focus on enjoying life, rather than worrying about whether your needs are being met.
Shared interests and personality

A carer who shares one’s interests, whether that's gardening, cooking, a love of classic films, or simply a good chat over a cup of tea, can make all the difference.
We've seen clients form genuine friendships with their carers. When you actually enjoy spending time with someone, care stops feeling like care and starts feeling like companionship. And that's exactly what we want for you or your loved one.
Location and logistics

Your carer needs to be able to get to you reliably, and their travel arrangements need to work for everyone involved. It might sound like a small detail, but it's one less thing to worry about when everything's running smoothly.
Getting to know your potential carers

Once we've identified a shortlist of carers who match your needs and preferences, you'll receive their profiles through our online portal. Each profile includes a biography, details of their experience and training, their interests, and the languages they speak.
But profiles only tell you so much. That's why we believe in going a step further.
Introductory calls: getting to know each other

Unlike some care providers who simply send over a profile and leave you to make a decision, we facilitate introductory calls between you and your potential carers.
These can be over the phone or via video call, and they are a chance to have a real conversation where you can ask questions, get a feel for their personality, and decide whether you'd be comfortable having them in your home. It's amazing how much you can learn from a short chat, including the way someone listens, the warmth in their voice, and the little things that don't come across on paper.
There's no obligation until you've found the main carer you're happy with and you've decided when you want the care to start. Take your time. This is a big decision, and we want you to feel completely confident.
Your care team: consistency you can count on

One of the concerns people often have about live-in care is consistency. What happens when their carer needs a break? Will they be faced with a different person every few weeks?
The answer is no. As part of our service, we put together a team of two carers: a primary carer and a secondary carer. You’ll get to know both of them incredibly well, and they'll work on a rotation to ensure as much consistency as possible.
Primary and secondary carers typically work on a rotation of four weeks on, two weeks off, though this is flexible and can be discussed between our carers and clients. That means you have continuity, familiarity, and the reassurance of knowing who's coming through your door.
You'll also have a dedicated family care coordinator: a go-to person for questions, updates, and care plan management day-to-day. Think of them as your personal guide, making sure everything runs smoothly and everyone stays on the same page.
What if things don't work out?
We always aim to get the match right from the start. That's why we put so much care into the assessment and introduction process. But life isn't always predictable, and sometimes things don't work out as planned. If you ever feel that things aren't quite right, our care management team is committed to arranging a replacement carer as soon as possible.
Trust your instincts
Choosing a carer is as much about the heart as it is about the head. Yes, you want someone with the right experience and training. But you also want someone you genuinely like, who makes you feel at ease, respected, and understood.
At Edyn, we're here to help you find them. Whether you have care in place at the moment or you're arranging care for the first time, our expert care management team is ready to support you every step of the way.
Because home care shouldn't feel complicated. It should feel like a walk in the park.
