How do edyn's carers handle food safety?
Good food is one of life's simple pleasures, and a real cornerstone of health and happiness, particularly in later life. But there is an important detail that often goes unspoken: for older people, food safety matters more than most of us realise. As we age, our bodies can become more vulnerable to the effects of food poisoning, so preparing and handling food safely is not just good practice, it is a genuine part of keeping someone well.
It is something we take seriously at Edyn. Here is how our carers help make sure that every meal is not only enjoyable, but safe.
Trained and supported from the start

Safe food handling begins with proper preparation. Every Edyn carer receives food safety awareness as part of their induction, and we support them with ongoing supervision and spot checks once they are caring, with further training provided if it is ever needed. In other words, safe practice around food is not left to chance. It is part of how our carers are trained, and part of how we keep an eye on standards over time.
Scrupulous hand hygiene

So much of food safety comes down to clean hands. Our carers wash their hands thoroughly at all the moments that matter: before preparing food, between handling raw and cooked items, after using the toilet, after dealing with waste or pets, and after coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose. It is a simple habit, done consistently and properly, and it makes an enormous difference.
Preventing cross-contamination

One of the most important parts of safe food preparation is keeping harmful bacteria from spreading. To do this, our carers:
- keep raw and cooked foods well apart
- clean chopping boards, knives and surfaces between tasks
- use separate boards where they are available
- cover food stored in the fridge
- label prepared or opened food with dates where appropriate
These small, careful steps quietly prevent the most common causes of foodborne illness.
Cooking, reheating and storing food safely

Getting the basics right protects your loved one at every stage. Our carers cook food thoroughly, reheat any dish only once and until it is piping hot, and follow the instructions on frozen and packaged foods for cooking and storage. And if anything looks, smells or seems even slightly off, they will throw it away rather than take a risk. When it comes to your loved one's health, we would always rather err on the side of caution.
Never preparing food when unwell

This is an important safeguard that gives families real peace of mind. If a carer is feeling unwell, particularly with sickness, an upset stomach or any sign of infection, they will not prepare food. They inform our office straight away and stay away from food preparation until they have been completely symptom-free for at least 48 hours, so there is no risk of passing anything on. Your loved one's wellbeing always comes first.
Keeping the kitchen safe, too

Our carers also keep a watchful eye on the kitchen itself. If they ever notice something that could compromise food safety, such as unsafe food storage, broken equipment or a hygiene concern, they raise it with us promptly, and we work with you to put it right. It is all part of keeping the whole environment safe and healthy.
Safe and personal: following the care plan

Food safety goes hand in hand with getting food right for the individual. Alongside all of the above, our carers always follow your loved one's care plan and personal preferences, including any allergies, special dietary requirements, texture needs, or cultural and religious considerations. The aim is food that is safe, nourishing and genuinely enjoyable, and exactly right for them. You can read more about how we capture all of this in our guide to the care assessment.
A culture of caution
Perhaps most reassuring of all is the simple principle our carers work to: if in doubt, ask. If a carer is ever unsure whether something is safe, or notices that your loved one seems unwell after eating, they report it immediately rather than pressing on. That watchfulness, and the willingness to check rather than assume, is one of the best protections there is.
Enjoyable meals, safely made
Mealtimes should be a comfort and a pleasure, never a worry. By handling food with genuine care and professionalism, our carers help make sure that the food your loved one enjoys is always as safe as it is satisfying.
