Can a live-in carer also help my spouse?

Can a live-in carer also help my spouse?

When one partner needs live-in care, the other very often shares the same home. So it is a natural and very common question: is the carer only there for the person they have come to look after, or can they lend a hand to their husband or wife too?

It is a lovely question to ask, because it gets to the heart of what makes live-in care so special for couples. The short answer is that yes, with the right arrangement, a carer can help support a spouse as well. Here is how it works, what is included, and where the sensible limits lie.

The carer's main focus

First, a little clarity. A live-in carer is there primarily for the person the care has been arranged for, following that person's individual care plan. Their training, their time and their attention are dedicated first and foremost to meeting that person's needs safely and well. So by default, a carer's duties are centred on the person receiving care, rather than the whole household.

That said, we know that in a shared home, a couple is a team, and real life rarely draws neat lines down the middle. Which is exactly why we offer spousal support.

What spousal support includes

With our optional spousal support arrangement, agreed in advance and set out in the care plan, your carer can also lend a helping hand to the partner with light domestic tasks that keep the household ticking along nicely. Depending on what is agreed, this can include:

  • light cleaning and tidying of shared areas
  • laundry and a little light ironing
  • preparing simple meals for both of you
  • small shops or errands
  • making beds and managing the rubbish
  • feeding pets, where agreed

The idea is simple: to help the whole home run more smoothly, so both partners feel supported and life feels that bit easier. Spousal support is available for a small additional weekly cost (currently £100 per week), and you can read more in our guide to the cost of live-in care.

Where the sensible limits lie

To keep things fair, safe and focused, a few things sit outside a live-in carer's role, whether for the person receiving care or their spouse. These include heavy or deep cleaning, moving heavy furniture, gardening and home maintenance, managing finances or legal matters, dog walking (unless it has been specifically agreed), and any complex or specialist tasks outside a carer's training.

There is also one important distinction worth understanding. Spousal support covers light domestic help for a partner, not personal or nursing care. If your husband or wife also needs help with things like washing, dressing or medication, that is absolutely something we can support, but it would be arranged as care in its own right. In fact, live-in care for couples, where both partners have care needs, is something we do all the time. Just let us know, and we will talk it through.

If spousal support is not arranged

Where spousal support has not been included, a carer's tasks will focus on the person receiving care rather than the wider household. This is simply so everyone is clear from the outset about what is and is not part of the arrangement. And if you would like to add spousal support at any point, it is very easy to do.

How it all works

Everything is agreed with you from the start and written into the care plan, so expectations are clear and shared. If circumstances change, or you would like to adjust what is included, those changes simply go through our office. That keeps care consistent and safe, and means your carer always has clear, up-to-date guidance to follow.

Just as importantly, our carers bring kindness and respect into your home, and we know they will receive the same from you. A warm, calm and mutually respectful relationship is what makes shared living work beautifully, and our care team is always on hand to help smooth over any questions or adjust arrangements if ever needed. You are never on your own with it.

Keeping couples together

Perhaps the loveliest thing of all is what this makes possible. For many couples, live-in care means being able to stay together, in their own home, after a lifetime side by side, rather than facing the heartache of being separated into different care settings. Spousal support is one of the ways we help make life work for both of you, so you can carry on sharing your home and your days, with a little expert help along the way.
